Martin Landsky - [DJ/Producer]

Toegevoegd door kwab op Zaterdag 23 Juli 2005

Biografie:

Martin Landsky

Being a hobby-breakdancer at that time was the first step for an eleven year old Martin Landsky to discover his passion for black dancemusic. Using the pause-key of his tapedeck he started to create minimal loop tracks of early funk and rap classics for his performances on
the street as well as in contests. While the interest in manipulating sound via this cut-up technique grew on, the young Martin Landsky spent all his money to buy a second tapedeck and a primitive mixer. After that he took away a pitchable turntable from his father and „raped“ his family‘s Bontempi organ, which only should be used at special occasions, to design primitive
megamixes of his favourite tracks.

Influenced by an older friend which was deejaying as well, nightlife became more interesting for Martin, which started to spin at school partys and similar events at the age of fourteen. His improved skills led to frequent bookings at private parties in Hamburg.

Moved to Hamburg in 1986 he soon made new friends, with whom he visited the legendary Hamburg-based club „Front“ in 1988 for the first time. Although he was still into funk music and spinning funk records at parties this can be seen as the initial point for his interest in electronic music.

While he was caught between this different styles of music he became a regular at the Front, which started to become a meeting point for House-, Acid- & Technoheads. At this time Martin never dreamed of being a professional dj and - after leaving school successfully in 1990 - was instructed to work in a professional studio at Studio Funk HH in 1992.

Being infected by the hypnotic grooves of housemusic Martin played several fridays at Front and finally managed to introduce his own „insidefront“-nights in 1994. Also he was booked to play at other parties in Hamburg.

Leaving Studio Funk in 1995 he becomes part of Container Distribution, fresh founded distribution-department of Container Records. During summer of 1995 a sample CD called „Sampled House Vol. 1“ is released by Container. Due to his work as distributor Martin gets in touch with people from all over Germany and starts spinning in other cities more frequently.

A first highlight is a performance at the famous Berlinbased E-Werk where he is deejaying several times from 1996 until the club is closed. Monthly bookings at Globus/Tresor follow, also residencies at clubs like Unit, Duschbar, Lounge, Tempelhof e.g. in Hamburg.

In the meantime his interest in producing grows and Martin does some remixing for Studio 33, a studio which is not only interested in non-commercial underground music. As well he starts working on own tracks at home, using a friends equipment. Outcoming is a 12“ called the „Horner Corner EP“ which is released under his moniker City Nord on the London-based Mc Projectsimprint in 1997.

1998 sees the foundation of Martin‘s own label Effortil Records, where his „My Hidden Basement“-12“ is the first release. Another City Nord-EP called „Broken Glass“ follows on Critical Edge, soon after that another M:Landsky („Love-Fourty“) on Effortil.

In 1999 he leaves Container Distribution for a job at also Hamburg-based distributor Word and Sound, knowing that this job plus djing and producing will take more than 24 hours a day. So Martin decides to break up with Word and Sound in late 1999 to be self-employed. He also moves to Berlin, sets up his very own studio and changes the name of his label - Intim Recordings is born.

In 2000 his Berlin-connections work well and he is spinning regularly in clubs like Pfefferbank, Tresor and Casino. He also sets up a regular „Pokerflat Night“ on fridays alongside Steve Bug and Cle at Sternradio club.

Also he introduces his first Berlin-based releases to the world „Effortil EP“ / Intim, „Wild EP“ / Dessous, „Crude Clay“ / Pokerflat, Steve Bug‘s Remix of „Bloodhound“ / Intim and starts working on his first full-length album.

The new single „Follow Me“ is released on Intim in February 2001 and is just as much successful as „Bloodhound“ was. Also he finishes working on his album at the same time, which was released titled „In Between“ on Pokerflat in autumn 2001.

In 2002 Martin starts with his great DJ-Mix of the Poker Flat material for the 2nd Labelcompilation „Vol.2“ and ended 2002 with his lovely single „Mission Upskirt“.

Half a year later, in Summer 2003 he released „Reject“, with vocals by Hamburg-based Filip G, on Poker Flat. This single quickly became a global clubhit, being supported by tastemaking DJs and having a great performance in the official German Club Charts.

His current single „Housed“ has been exclusively produced for the „5 Years Of Poker Flat“ compilation, the already announced production „Fools (They Don‘t Know The Time)“ is scheduled for late spring 2004.
